There’s still time to make that personalized gift that almost anyone on your gift giving list can appreciate. Who can’t use a cell phone case, something that won’t only give extra protection, but reflect its owner’s personality? These simple little cases can be knitted, crocheted, and felted as well.
You can use just about any type of yarn you would like, including adding touches of novelty yarns for a bit of bling.
If you are like me, and can never find your phone from the depths of the back abyss of your handbag, you can make them up in bright colors, to never to be overlooked again. You can also add a button, snap or even Velcro for a closure, or leave the top open for even easier access.
If you have a little more time and energy, you can create a similar style case for your tablet, or even a sweet little zippered makeup case as shown. This is where I like to crochet or felt, because I can crochet my piece and try it on as I go, making sure that it fits just right. I can also crochet a bit wider and longer, and then felt it down to make it fit.
Watching your gauge with knitting is a bit trickier to get the fit just right. Last night, under the gun as usual, I knitted one case and felted it to perfection. The second case was knitted with a bit heavier yarn, so it would have stood to reason to subtract a few stitches. I knew this, but since I do like to knit dangerously I opted to keep the same amount of stitches, reasoning that I would rather felt a bit more, than not have the look that I was aiming for.
I was correct on both counts, less stitches would have afforded me less effort in felting, since I decided to felt by hand in my sink. I am very particular in how I felt, and standing over the washer overseeing a project in an unheated laundry room, off the garage, is not my idea of a good time, so I would rather work the piece by hand. I’ve been doing this a lot more often, and am actually finding that in the long run is saves water and time, and I can even have an even more perfect result. After the knitting time, which takes about an hour or so, the felting, depending on your yarn choice, will take about ten to twenty minutes.
