Unlike “Black Friday,” Small Business Saturday is a shopping concept that I can really get behind.Let the big box stores have their day; Small Business Saturday is for us little guys. I was very pleasantly surprised at last year’s turnout, and am looking forward to old and new customers to purposely come out to shop smaller businesses.
Many a customer declared last year that they were “shopping small” that day, because more and more shoppers are becoming aware just how important shopping locally really is. Keep this in the mind the next time that finger is poised, ready to click while you are shopping online. You may not realize that oft times, a small business can be competitive in price, or if not, perhaps the special service that you can get makes it worth spending a little extra.
When’s the last time your online shopping cart gave you a smile or even a hug, for just being you? Torrington’s Downtown businesses have been preparing this Saturday with specials, and activities for one and all. So grab your Thanksgiving company and plan to spend a little time downtown. Another bonus is that there will be free, two hour street parking through the month of December.
Fingerless gloves continue to be a popular gift item, and it’s a good thing — because they can be very fast and easy to make. This Sunday, November 30, from 1-2 pm, In Sheep’s Clothing will be offering another free workshop — this time a mini — on how to whip up a pair of fingerless mitts using a short circular needle, which means no sewing and no double pointed needles, for those of you who either have never worked with them, or don’t care to work with them. Basic knitting and purling skills are required for this workshop. Yarn and needles need to be purchased in the shop, and a pattern will be supplied.
