I had the yarn in my bag, the yarn unrolled and when I pulled it out it was such a tangled mess I could not get it straightened out without ripping the yarn apart

Oh, I’m sorry to hear that. I have just recently learned to keep my multiple projects in separate bags in my knitting bag for just that reason. I always had a mess. It only took me years to figure this out.
